Purpose
Sheriff Lamb's Juvenile Redirection Program is a pre-arrest initiative for young people who have gotten into trouble and are referred by a deputy or a parent.
I realized we needed to do something for our youth, especially youth who are struggling and making poor decisions
, said Sheriff Mark Lamb. If you were to look at your jail population, I would say that a good 20 to 30 percent probably could have been affected in a positive manner if they would've had a program like this.
About
The two-month program consists of weekly classroom sessions, where students work on setting personal goals, focus on career development, and talk about the problems of drugs and alcohol.
Participants also commit to community service hours at Saddle Sore LLC, a local Therapeutic Riding and Equine Program. There, they spend Saturday mornings cleaning up after the animals, working with them, and learning to care for them. Students also have scheduled equine therapy time with the horses to get to the root of their problems.
The program began in January 2019. About 150 juveniles have successfully graduated from the program.
